I love Fall. I love the gold, the browns, and the reds; I love the leaves, the trees, and even the leaves on the ground. But as I walk along, sometimes I come across things that are also very, very colourful - mushrooms.

The mushrooms are beautiful, aren't they? I love the colour of the red speckled top and the cream white stem. But of course, these mushrooms are deadly. They are very, very poisonous.

2 Corinthians 11:14 says, “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”

These mushrooms remind me that Satan’s ways are intended to destroy us. He wants to divide us by having us argue. He wants to disrupt us by tempting us to follow ways that we know are against the way of Jesus. He wants to divert us, to get us focused on things that do not matter, that keep us from focusing upon the Gospel. Like the mushrooms, he is deadly.

How do we resist him? Ephesians 6 reminds us to put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation, the shoes that are ready with the Gospel, and the shield of faith, and to wield the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

We're also reminded to pray: to pray for the advance of the Gospel and to pray for one another.

As we approach Halloween, let us remember to seek the Lord. Let us remember to pray against the powers of darkness. Let us remember to pray for strength to keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus.

The Lord enables us to stand firm and to remain in love with one another. So, we will not fall into the trap of the one who masquerades as an angel of light. Instead, we will look upon Jesus and follow him.
