Matthew 10:40-42 says, "Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you that person will certainly not lose their reward."
Last week we finished collecting the Christmas shoeboxes. On the building we had a sign and in the church there were volunteers receiving the boxes and making sure they were packed before being shipped to different parts of the world.
These boxes become a tangible sign of God's grace and love to young children - children who are less fortunate than us, who need that wonderful sense of God's love and peace in their lives.
In Matthew 10:40-42, Jesus reminds us that if we even offer a cup of cold water to a little one who is one of his disciples then we show our love for him and we show what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Of course, the shoeboxes are more than just a cup of cold water, but you get the idea: a simple, meaningful way that touches people's lives can make all the difference. That's what the shoeboxes are all about as these two volunteers explain.
The best part is knowing that that box will make a kid very, very happy. And that a person is taking the time out of their schedules to make this box for these kids. And it means the world to both be a giver and a recipient. That's what it is for me.
The best thing is seeing people come together and actually bring different gifts. And for different people, it has different meaning for different people. And I have the pleasure of watching that and even hearing different stories as well. So for me, that's the best part.
As we draw nearer to the beginning of Advent, let’s remember these verses about offering even a cup of cold water. Let's remember that we can make a difference in somebody's life. It does not have to be an elaborate, expensive gift. It may be coming alongside somebody, listening to them, offering to pray for them, sharing Scripture with them, letting them know that Jesus loves them, holding their hand, giving them a hug. These are things all of us can do.
May you be blessed as you serve Jesus and take the opportunities the Lord gives to show his love in a meaningful yet perhaps simple way to somebody.

Grace and peace
