On Saturday, my daughter went on a mission trip with the youth from another local church. The group left early in the morning. Later that day, my wife flew to the UK because her brother is unwell and she needs to complete some business work.
I admit I feel depressed when I say goodbye to family.
It’s even more poignant because my mom passed away exactly four years ago today. I miss her very, very much.
As I was thinking about these goodbyes and the loss of my mom a few years ago, I listened to Psalm 91. This begins, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
The word “shelter” is the same word translated “hiding place” in the famous phrase, “You are my hiding place” (Psalm 32:7 and Psalm 119:114). The word “shadow” can also mean “shade” as in Psalm 121:5, which says, “The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.”
Where can we turn when we feel low? Who is our refuge? Who understands us completely? Who carries our burdens and comes alongside us? Who is our hope and confidence?
It is the living God. The One who sent his own Son to die for us, to pay the price for our sin, and be raised on the third day to bring us hope.
In those seasons when I feel down, I turn to Jesus. He is my shelter, my shade, my hiding place.
Today, turn to him for he is your hiding place, shadow, and shelter.
