Welcome back to our weekly devotion. And thank you for your prayers for me and my family while I was on vacation.
During the second week of our vacation my wife and I celebrated our 35th anniversary. We went to Whistler. While in Whistler, my daughter and I took the peak-to-peak gondola tour. This took us up Whistler Mountain, across to Blackcomb Mountain, and then back down to town.
A highlight awaited us at the top of Whistler Mountain. After a short 10-minute walk and a ski-chair lift, at a height of about 2,200 meters above sea level, there is the Cloudraker Skybridge and Raven’s Eye Cliff Walk. The Skybridge is a 130-metre steel suspension bridge. The Raven’s Eye is a steel platform that juts out from the top of the mountain. My daughter and I loved the experience, even though she has a natural fear of heights.
Travelling so high in the gondolas, the ski chair lift, and on the suspension bridge, completely enthralled by views that defy description, reminded me of the opening of John’s Gospel.
John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” It’s as if John has taken us to the highest point in all eternity. From this vantage point we see the ultimate, staggering, and glorious truth about Jesus. Jesus is before all time – before the beginning. Jesus is the supreme revelation of God – he is the Word. And Jesus is One with his heavenly Father – he is God. There is no greater truth because Jesus is the greatest truth. And no higher worship can ever be offered because Jesus is so worthy.
Most of the time we don’t ascend mountains or walk on suspension bridges over 2,000 meters above sea level. At least we don’t physically. But when we meet with Jesus in our devotions, through prayer, in Scripture, among other believers, and in our circumstances and situations, we see further, higher, and more clearly than ever. We see the One who is our hope, who sits enthroned above all powers, rulers, and authorities, who loves us and calls us to live for him. There is nothing more stunning and awesome than knowing Jesus.
Today, take time to worship him for who he is and for what he’s done on the Cross. You will have a view that will take your breath away.

Grace and peace
