About Us
Trinity Baptist Church is affiliated with Canadian Baptists of Western Canada (CBWC) a family of 180 Baptist churches in the four western provinces of western Canada.
We are a Christian community made up of people from many different parts of the world. Our 9:30 a.m. worship service is in Mandarin and English, while our 11:00 am worship service is English only.
Every Sunday there is a ‘Fellowship group’ primarily for people from the Philippines (New Beginnings) and a ‘Fellowship group’ for Mandarin speaking people from Asia. (New Life).
On Wednesday evenings during the Fall, Winter and Spring – we enjoy dinner together ($5) which is followed by Bible studies – which are offered in both Mandarin and English.
Wednesday evening also sees Youth activities taking place.
There are a number of other groups that meet monthly details of which you will find on the events of the week section of our website.
OUR HISTORY
In 1913, a group of Baptists (the beginnings of our present Trinity Church) started meeting in a home at 38th and Dunbar. In 1920, after meeting for some time in a school at 41st and Carnarvon, the fledgling congregation (then called Calvary Baptist) bought an empty lot at 43rd and E Boulevard. They had been given a ‘free’ church building – BUT there was a problem. The building was in Port Coquitlam.
Undaunted, the congregation decided it was possible to move the church to Kerrisdale. The church was put on rollers and hoisted over a twenty-foot dike onto a large tug-pulled barge. The moving of the building was a Herculean task. Six bridges had to be raised to let it pass under and the BC Electric had to cut its wires in Coquitlam and Vancouver.
Finally the journey down the Pitt and Fraser rivers was completed and the building was beached at the foot of Angus Avenue. Once again huge rollers were used to carry the church to its destination during the night. It fit perfectly onto the foundation built for it. Nothing inside the church was damaged and when the electricity was hooked up, every bulb winked on. The congregation changed its name to Kerrisdale Baptist.
The church worshiped in that building at 43rd and E Boulevard until they needed a bigger building. They built at 49th and Granville, changed the name again, this time to Trinity Baptist and had their first service in our present sanctuary in 1955.
Trinity is literally a Travelling Church!
(This story was gleaned from “The Past is the Prologue” a booklet about our church’s history printed in 1974. The church office has copies.)
